The multiprotocol multiplexed superhybrid BUS-65149 is the first dual redundant universal MIL-STD-1553 remote terminal unit (RTU) hybrid. The terminal was designed to support a dual redundant RTU protocol including universal transceivers that will work in 1533 A&B, McDonnell Douglas (McAIR), General Dynamics (GD), Grumman, and NATO Stanag 3838 applications. The BUS-65149, consists of two special chips: bipolar transceivers and a custom CMOS protocol chip. The author discusses the various features and functions incorporated, especially the selective options which make this terminal flexible. He also reviews special features which allow the BUS-65149 to support applications with or without dedicated microprocessors. The other programmable features are 8/16 bit I/O, 12/16 MHz clock selection, 1553A/B selection, broadcast enable/disable, external bit word control, external status word inputs, and Hi/Lo word count checker. The electrical, mechanical, and special features of the terminal are highlighted. The hybrid is manufactured in a certified MIL-STD-1772 facility, and is screened to MIL-STD-883, Rev C, Method 5008, for full military temperature range of -55 to +125 degrees C.
