A three frequency echo-sounder and data logger for recording the acoustic energy back-scattered by fine suspended sediments in the sea has been developed. The use of three high frequencies will allow the estimation of particle size as well as total suspended load. The system is usually deployed 1.2 m about the sea bed mounted on a large, instrumented tetrapod which records water currents, surface wave activity and suspended sediments by optical backscatter and beam attenuation. The authors describe the current state of the equipment which has been developed from a simple, one frequency system.
