The author presents the factors involved in developing and implementing a training program for satellite operations staff. In particular, the author makes reference to the training for the Inmarsat second generation satellite system, which was spread over six months of 1990. The operations staff need sufficient expertise to be able to respond immediately to any emergencies and they must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in a safe manner, before they can be permitted access to the system itself. The author discusses the nature of satellite operations and how the training is linked to the operations.
