The question of comparative reliability is addressed in the context of the new Thonon-les-Bains funicular railway, rising 46.5 m with gradients locally steeper than 1 in 5. Photographs are reproduced of the 53-passenger vehicle and of the system's two redundant programmable controllers, whose principle is explained with the aid of a block diagram. The 'sleeping fault hunt' performed at each start is outlined, and the dual hydraulic braking system (normally used only as a parking brake) with its 'parachute' brakes is described briefly. At the basic level, electronic systems are preferable as being unaffected by wear, but the seriousness of any programmable controller failure is of a different order.
