Opportunities exist for organised criminals to open vehicles fitted with remote locking systems, by listening for the key code, storing the code and retransmitting it, such a device being known as a keygrabber. In this paper, fundamental requirements are developed for key encoders which both maintain synchronism with their decoder and can be guaranteed to evade keygrabbers.
