What is a smart card? It is a credit card with a small microprocessor chip with more information and with more ability to talk back to its interrogator than a credit card. Its scope is increasing daily as the development of the microchip produces more power in a smaller space and with the use of less power. However clever, a device needs to be used and given clear instructions to use its capability properly. The author discusses the various problems and system design which can flow from the versatile ability of the smart card. In particular, he examines the application of such technology to the field of automobile security systems.
