The Joint STARS sensor system is the primary element in both US and allied operational concepts with its ability to cover large areas inside specific geographical regions to detect and track targets, including differentiation of wheeled and tracked vehicles on the move. The airborne wide-area ground surveillance radar provides battle management through its ability to detect, locate, classify and track both moving and fixed objects in all weather conditions. The airborne radar system also is designed for applications in regions such as the Middle East, Central and South America and the Far East to support a variety of combat scenarios. The heart of Joint STARS is the Norden AN/APY-3, an X-Band synthetic aperture phased array radar system integrated in the E-8 aircraft by Grumman Melbourne Systems.
