A Vuilleumier refrigerator for spaceborne applications is under development with the following performance goals: a cooling power of simultaneously 1 watt at 50 K and 5 watts at 190 K for an overall electrical consumption less than 250 watts. The main features necessary for long-life operation (over 50000 hours) are the use of contactless hydrodynamic gas bearings, clearance seals and magnetic rotato-reciprocating actuators. The feasibility of all critical components has been proven. A first prototype of a thermal compressor with a bearing at its warm end (1000 K) has been built and tested. The design of a refrigerator engineering model presently under construction is presented
