Most future fighters will depend on embedded, real-time, fault tolerant, distributed software for their safe and secure functioning, especially during combat. Such software-dominated weapons systems are new in engineering, and the state of the art is immature. They have, therefore, caused considerable concern and debate among fighter designers. The paper presents a view of the difficulties faced by fighter designers when setting down the software requirements and specifications for their designs.
