The authors model passenger flows in urban systems. An approach to the calculation of prior trip probabilities is proposed, based on a development of Stoufler's model of intervening opportunities. The proposed approach uses certain assumptions on passenger behavior, instead of the overall characteristics of passenger flows. As a result, the errors associated with nonstationarity of the actual travel distance curve are eliminated and it becomes possible to determine the dependence of the travel distance on time of day and to construct the mobility chains modeling recreational travel patterns.
