Increased ballistic missile defense interceptor accuracies, resulting from onboard homing and guidance technologies, are placing the United States on the threshold of demonstrating near-term strategic defense capabilities. The Army is pursuing developmental programs along two lines, the near-term and a longer term, 10- to 15-year effort. This latter program encompasses advanced multimode sensors, battle management and directed energy weapons.
