Scientists are preparing Starlab experiments to resolve critical technology issues associated with the development of space-based weapons for strategic defense against nuclear-armed warheads. Scheduled for an early 1992 launch, the Strategic Defense Initiative Starlab mission will be one of the most complex space shuttle missions, involving a diverse field of experts in the areas of electro-optics, sensors, control systems and sensor analyses. The experiment's emphasis is on directed energy weapons.
