A microprocessor-based controller for a vehicle air-conditioning system is described. It consists of a control unit resident in the vehicle to control the on/off switching of the engine and the air-conditioning unit. The control unit consists of a control panel which serves as a medium for the user to communicate with the microprocessor and a display to provide feedback to the user. A remote control unit with transmission through radio wave is also developed. Various design considerations are discussed, and a system description is given in which the remote control unit and residential control unit are characterized. The RF transmitter and receiver designs, as well as the digital circuitry and system software used, are presented.
