The author reviews signs of success with automatic target recognition technology. She highlights the obstacles which still face researchers struggling to improve performance of key components such as algorithms, processors and sensor technology, and increase overall system performance. Current ATR research takes three forms: multi-sensor fusion, electro-optics and radar. There are two basic levels of discrimination, tracking or initial detection of either air or ground targets, and the higher-level recognition or identification.
