Several management challenges are posed by growing dependency on weapons software. One of these is determining when such systems, and their software, are ready for operational test and evaluation. A measurement of software maturity has been used successfully during development to assess software test readiness. Software problems result from both errors and requirement modifications. Each problem is categorized by one of five Defense Department standard levels of severity with associated weights. Changes to the software are characterized by the severity level of the problem that the change fixed. In software metrics, three curves-originated, closed and remaining-illustrate software maturity. The primary indicator is illustrated by accumulating only the first occurrence of each problem and then multiplying it by the associated severity weight in relation to time.
