Hypervelocity weapons use electromagnetic energy to provide enormous propelling forces, accelerating projectiles to velocities many times faster than with current conventional chemical propellants. At the heart of these new weapons is a compact pulsed electrical power source that also could alter fundamentally the way in which future-generation land combat systems may be conceived and designed. The source of power for the primary hyperkinetic weapon also may provide electrical energy to all or part of a vehicle's propulsion, eliminating the bulky mechanical drive train and transmission. It may also provide energy to an entirely new form of electromagnetic armour to protect the vehicle from oncoming shaped charge or kinetic energy projectiles.
