Advanced modular avionics architectures represented by for example the US Pave Pillar concept rely heavily on recent advances in micro-electronics. The modular avionics philosophy is to increase flexibility through improved functional integration to improve the 'ilities' through redundancy, reconfiguration, Built in Self Test (BIST) and fault tolerance. These advances are intended to increase system availability, reduce crew workload, and reduce the cost of ownership predominantly by reducing maintenance costs.
