One of the measures proposed in the Netherlands for safeguarding and improving traffic mobility in the densely populated areas is Rekening Rijden. Rekening Rijden (RR) is aimed at a reduction of traffic flow in the Netherlands in general and a specific reduction of traffic flow within the Randstad at peak hours by increasing the variable costs of car driving by extra charging the use of heavily used roads in this area at peak hours. The RR system is designed to meet European standards and is open to other applications such as user information systems, fleet management systems, and traffic guidance systems.
