Following a series of group discussions and in depth interviews, a questionnaire was developed which sought to establish the sorts of route guidance and advice that users might require in different circumstances. The questionnaire was designed such that the respondents would complete it at home and return it by post. Distribution was to be by hand to peoples' homes with a brief verbal description by survey staff of the purpose of the survey. Two thousand copies were distributed in London during July 1989 and a 40% response rate was achieved. The questionnaire was translated, as closely as possible, into German and French. In the paper the authors analyse the results of the questionnaire.
