The flywheel system EMAFER (electromechanical accumulator for energy reuse) is designed for propulsion of an electrically driven city bus. Recent developments involving the use of current source converters with external commutation source are summarized. A modified line-commutated converter with GTO switches is described, and results of measurements on a 100 kVA prototype are given.
