The development of electric vehicles (EVs) charged by photovoltaic cells is discussed. In this system, the principal photovoltaic cells were installed on the roof of a private house, and subcells were mounted on the roof of an EV. Electric energy thus obtained was used in charging a secondary battery mounted on the EV. The energy stored in the secondary battery was then used in driving the motor and propelling the EV. It takes time to charge the secondary battery with energy output from the photovoltaic cells, whereas it discharges in a short amount of time. Thus low-density solar energy is converted to high-density electric energy to provide constant power output.
