The design status of the power management and distribution electric power system for the Space Station Freedom is presented. The design is a star architecture, which has been found to be the best approach for meeting the requirement to deliver 120 V DC to the user interface. The architecture minimizes mass and power losses while improving element-to-element isolation and system flexibility. The design is partitioned into three elements: energy collection, storage and conversion, system protection and distribution, and management and control.
