Missiles that can fly to specific battlefield areas and then switch from one target to another while maintaining pinpoint accuracy are being developed using optical fiber tethers for guidance. Pulses of laser light transmit digital data via small diameter-but highly rugged-optical tethers, providing two-way communications between the missile and its launcher. This fiber optics guided missile, generally known as FOG-M, is an extrapolation of commercial uses of fiber cables for communications. The tethered guidance enables a single soldier to fire and control simultaneously up to five missiles against targets out to a range of approximately 12 miles. AT&T Bell Laboratories provides the missile's optical fiber guidance system to the Army's Missile Command. AT&T also provides quantities of the fiber optic cable to Hughes Aircraft, another FOG-M contractor.
