The vibrations to which spacecraft are subjected on launching call for careful design and testing on the basis of an analytical model applied to results of measurements made on previous flights. A process is summarised starting from a detailed finite-element model of each subassembly, from which a system model is derived by mode-coupling methods and reduced to one having at most 250 degrees of dynamic freedom, for coupling to a model of the launcher. Design qualification tests applied by Intespace at Toulouse are outlined, with descriptions of acoustic field simulation tests in a reverberation chamber, and of the analysis of test data from up to 160 detectors with a Masscomp 5700 multiprocessor. The software, written in FORTRAN 77 or C, comprises five main modules covering test preparation and system verification, data acquisition, signal analysis, editing and display of results, and systems management utilities.
