The trend in Soviet naval electronic warfare is moving toward an independent type of combat action role in war at sea and away from a purely combat support mission. This new capability could be integrated into fleet and aviation forces in the near future for application to antisubmarine warfare and sea lane interdiction. Electronic warfare in the Soviet Union already has undergone significant changes in the past few years, and today represents a composite of both combat support and combat action forces. Soviet naval electronic warfare concepts differ in some important aspects from those practiced by the US Navy and the navies of other Western nations. One of the most important differences is that the Soviets place great emphasis on a variety of camouflage measures in conducting electronic warfare-radio deception and misinformation are stressed at all levels of command. Another significant difference is that Soviet naval doctrine places a much higher priority on the physical destruction of the opponent's electronic sensors and systems, even through the use of tactical nuclear weapons, if necessary.
