Advances in the control of flexible structures are necessitated by the stringent requirements on pointing and shape accuracy of some future space mission. The author reviews the work of Balas in the application of mu methods to an experimental structure. A discussion of mu methods is provided and the important area of uncertainty descriptions is covered. The mu -synthesis method has the advantage that it can take the structure of these uncertainties into account during design. The results of the mu -synthesis designs are discussed, and conclusions are given.
