The results of three DoD/industry studies related to CAE R&M (computer-aided engineering reliability and maintainability) strongly imply that new approaches are necessary for the DoD acquisition process. The recommended approaches are consistent with computer-aided acquisition and logistic support (CALS) objectives and with many other ongoing DoD strategies such as total quality management, streamlining and could-cost. The issues of design-decision support, contractor motivation, and source selection are discussed.
