As part of a research program on electromagnetic guns (the REMGUN programme), various switch devices are being investigated for use with both railgun and linear induction accelerator (LIA) systems. The major area of research lies in opening switches for homopolar-generator-driven railguns, and specifically for REMGUN 3, a 6.7 MJ railgun system. During this work a requirement for an opening switch with a fast turnaround time was identified, and a linear explosive switch (LYNEX) has been produced. It utilizes linear, shaped-charge explosives to cut thin-cross-section section busbar material and has been demonstrated at 320 kA. An engineered version, currently under development, is expected to be capable of switching 750 kA. The LYNEX design rational is presented, and subsystem and system tests are discussed.
