Railway electrification, especially with heavy traffic, has led to problems of adverse disturbances in power supply systems. Its focal point, at present, is harmonic distortion. The authors describe measures which can be adopted to reduce the effects of harmonics. The basic method is to fit filters in electric locomotives, which should be designed with locomotive parameters in mind.
