British Rail has recently initiated the industrial development of specified multiplex push pull control equipment for electric locomotive applications. The authors show how investigations were carried out in order to: assess the validity of the performance requirements in this specification; to prove the feasibility of operating processor-based equipment in the hostile environment of an electric locomotive; and to acquaint the manufacturers of the equipment with the railway environment.
