The US Army's first major effort to develop a prototype laser weapon system was its mobile test unit (MTU) program, conducted in the early 1970s. The MTU was a 30000 W CO2 laser system. The MTU was followed by the close-combat laser weapon, a device designed to attack enemy sensors. One system that has gathered considerable media attention is Stingray. It is a vehicle mounted self-protection system designed to degrade or destroy enemy electro-optics such as laser range-finders and laser target designators. There is a growing emphasis in military organisations on actively training with their laser systems. The best known of these laser training systems is the multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES). MILES uses eye-safe laser diode devices mounted to weapons and laser sensors worn by soldiers and mounted on vehicles to determine who 'killed' who in training engagements.
