The authors present some developments of unconventional AC drives. The project looked at in particular is a railway locomotive with eight wheel-subsystems (WS). Each system is a wheel driven by its own motor, a PWM convertor and a microprocessor for digital control. AC drives are used with a power of 40 kW and frequency of 16 kHz.
