Todays powerful microprocessors enable extensive diagnostic and self-test capabilities to be built into control systems on rail vehicles. This allows problems to be identified and corrected faster than in the past. The author discusses the diagnostic and self-test capabilities of the DC chopper propulsion control systems and the hydraulic friction braking control system supplied by AEG Westinghouse Transportation Systems Inc.
