A description is given of the adaptive tactical navigator (ATN), a laboratory prototype of a knowledge-based system, to provide navigation-system management and decision-aiding in the next generation of tactical aircraft. ATN's purpose is to manage a set of multimode navigation equipment, dynamically selecting the best equipment to use in accordance with mission goals and phase, threat environment, equipment malfunction status, and battle damage. ATN encompasses such functions as sensor data interpretation, diagnosis, and planning. The test and evaluation program to evaluate benefits and artificial design factors of the ATN is discussed. The laboratory environment and test mission profile are described, and general experimental design and evaluation methodologies are outlined. Example scenarios and a discussion of test execution are provided. Future experimental efforts related to ATN are summarized.
