The Air Force Logistics Command has embarked on a$1.7-billion program to modernize their computerized information systems for the 1990s. A description is given of the layout and performance of the backbone of this modernization program, the Air Logistics Center Local Area Network (ALC LAN), and of the ALC LAN program. The ALC LAN architecture includes three major systems. The cable plant provides RF connectivity for 24500 user outlets in 177 buildings across five ALCs. The network interface unit performs all the LAN intelligence functions, including addressing, error checking, and retransmission. A technical control and monitor system monitors the status of all LAN components and accumulates traffic data to assess system performance. Since 1985, installations of large LANs have been proceeding concurrently at five ALCs. Completion is expected in 1990.
