One distributed computing environment for building and operating distributed applications is Cronus. Funded primarily by the US Air Force Rome Air Development Center (RADC) to support command and control (C2) applications, Cronus addresses each of the sources of complexity that confronts the distributed application developer. Cronus offers a comprehensive and integrated approach to building distributed applications that will reduce the cost of application development and maintenance and prolong application lifetimes. It has been used to build a range of applications, including prototype C2, office automation and simulation applications. The resources of a wide area Cronus test bed, currently in use for distributed software development and experimentation are shown.
