Visual aspects of road safety are discussed with reference to curves relating the percentages of night-time accidents on lit and unlit roads to average luminance or visual acuity, whose variations with age of the driver and ambient illumination are characterised. The physiological transition from photopic to scotopic vision is described. Quality standards for public lighting are related to visual acuity, contrast and dazzle. Road lighting in France is shown to be cost-effective at traffic levels of 10000 vehicles per day on major roads and 120000 on motorways; the saving of one life would pay for the installation and ten years' maintenance of light along 1.5 km of road.
