The Archimedes study examined the technical and economic feasibility of developing a system of satellites in highly inclined elliptical orbits to provide land mobile communications in Europe. The paper presents the conclusions of the British Aerospace-led team, showing the performance that can be achieved from an inclined orbit system and comparing it with that achievable from a GEO system.
