The authors propose a novel Rayleigh fading compensation method for 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM). The optimum parameters for 16QAM with a transmission rate of 16 k symbol/s, the BER (bit error rate) performance, and the interference performance are determined by computer simulation. It is shown that second-order interpolation is suitable for the fading compensation method. In the case of 16 k-symbol/s transmission, the optimum frame length is 16 symbols. The degradation due to the proposed fading compensation method is about 2 dB. The BER performance under Rayleigh fading environments at fd<100 Hz is in good agreement with the theoretical value. The BER performance degradation of the implemented 16QAM modem from the simulated results is only about 1 dB. These results confirm that a 16QAM modem using the proposed method can be applied to land mobile communications.
