Describes how multiplex wiring systems may revolutionize the way cars are designed, assembled, and services. Redundant sensors will be eliminated, and it will be possible to obtain diagnostics for the whole system through a single port. Environmental and electrical problems and signal priority problems are outlined. CarLink, a standard serial communication bus, is described. Various types of network are considered for signals at three levels of required performance (accuracy and speed). Mechatronics developments are briefly discussed.
