The United Airlines' flight terminal at Chicago's O'Hare airport (USA) applies advanced illumination concepts that match the technology and design of the building structure. The three key design goals to be met in the lighting design were: to maintain moderate and relatively constant illumination levels in the daylighted spaces; to reduce the ceiling brightness; and to minimize direct and reflected glare. The author shows how photo-controlled indirect metal-halide lamps and fluorescent sources serve acres of daylighted public spaces.
