The superior R-C product and resulting high frequency properties of the electromechanical relay can make it the microwave switch chosen for several key systems areas. In many cases, the immunity to high voltage of the electromechanical device compared with its solid-state counterparts is a key issue. For signal switching near the antenna in a high performance radar, EW or communication system, the relay properties preserve the dynamic range of the system. For automated test systems, the combined requirements of system measurement integrity and multiple measurement paths demand an exceptional switch with requirements met by the electromechanical relay. While the author's discussion focuses on SPDT switches, more complex configurations may be seen-for example, switch arrays for more complicated antenna array switching systems. High-Rel versions of the types of switches discussed are common in space configuration.
