Air Force planners are developing a family of reconnaissance systems featuring electro-optic (EO) sensors and digital recording. Under the umbrella concept of the advanced tactical air reconnaissance system (ATARS), the systems will be built-in configurations for addition to both manned and unmanned tactical reconnaissance platforms. Under the ATARS program, the Air Force will develop a common family of EO sensor suites. The effect will include full-scale development of sensors, data-link sets, recorders and a reconnaissance management system. The core of the systems carries the same name as the overall program-ATARS. The core system is a new EO reconnaissance sensor suite that will be built in several configurations, and will eventually replace existing camera systems used on US tactical aircraft.
