NASA is to design a computer for a space station that could be in service through the year 2025. NASA envisions the space station as a floating laboratory for developing new materials in near-zero gravity and for testing the effects of long-term space flight on man. The agency would also like someday to see the station serve as a staging ground for distant voyages. Computing activities on the space station will revolve around a data management system (DMS) designed primarily for information processing in a network configuration. The DMS will, among other tasks, monitor and control life-sustaining systems, operate guidance systems and maintain a database for onboard operations and experiments. Although the station's orbiting computer networks may not, in itself, be considered a technological ground breaker, what NASA is doing on Earth could potentially plow new ground for the IS industry. To provide a complete and consistent set of tools for building software, the agency is building a software support environment (SSE) consisting of integrated hardware, software, procedures, standards documentation and training material.
