Discusses a comprehensive program carried out in the USSR for metrological support to gravimetry, which is related to tightened specifications for unified and accurate gravimetric measurements. The program is based on a system of standard polygons formed by small numbers (about 10) of fundamental gravimetric points, at each of which periodic measurements are made by absolute means on the gravitational acceleration by means of ballistic gravimeters. As these may show systematic errors, one needs to consider the design of absolute pendulum instruments. The fundamental gravimetric network provides the basis for the first-class reference network set up by means of the Agat pendulum instrument. The second-class and third-class networks can be set up by means of wide-range static gravimeters. The general use of ballistic gravimeters enables one to avoid a multistage reference-network system.
