Applications are discussed of electronics for the control of ignition and fuelling functions on petrol-engined vehicles in response to pressures for reduced exhaust emissions, greater fuel economy and improved performance. Individual and integral systems to control ignition/fuelling, their adaptation to suit different markets (emission legislation), major components, control techniques, and signal processing aspects are covered. Two engine management systems being offered for application on new vehicles, and investigations into applying new sensors for monitoring fundamental combustion events are also discussed.
