For some military applications such as anti-armour and air defence, increasing muzzle velocity leads to significant increases in weapon performance. The EM railgun has already demonstrated velocities in excess of 10 km/sec and muzzle energies over 6 MJ, and ideally requires a high current, low voltage pulsed power system. The author describes options and problems associated with railguns and their power supplies.
