The light airborne multipurpose system (LAMPS) Mk III helicopter has shown it can help surface ships find and attack enemy submarines operating far from their bases. LAMPS aircraft feature computer-integrated, ship-to-platform systems for deploying sonobuoys and torpedoes in support of antisubmarine warfare (ASW). They also provide the processing of magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) sensor information and other electronic support measures (ESM). The Mark III's airframe is the SH-60B Seahawk, manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, Conn. The helicopter uses a pneumatic launcher and two AN/ARR-75 receivers for deploying sonobuoys and for receiving data processed by an AN/UYS-1 acoustic detection set. By linking sonobuoy data to a host ship, full use is made of a ship's sonar signal processing capability.
