New aircraft technology promises to reduce pilot workload and improve mission performance. One main goal of researchers is to automate many of the tasks associated with flying so pilots can concentrate on the primary mission at hand, whether that be close air support (CAS), air-to-air combat, or antisubmarine warfare. Significant efforts in this area are underway at the Flight Dynamics Lab on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. A program there called Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI) uses a modified General Dynamics Corp. F-16 fighter as a testbed, referred to as the AFT/F-16.
