Autoguide is the name given to in-vehicle route guidance systems in the UK which are dynamic, i.e. they respond to traffic conditions in calculating recommended routes. Such systems depend upon an infrastructure of roadside beacons. The paper describes the Autoguide system design, and outlines the objectives for the proposed pilot system. It discusses the importance of the emerging draft standard on road-vehicle communication and looks forward to widespread European availability of compatible dynamic route guidance systems. It also discusses in particular the opportunities offered by Autoguide in traffic monitoring.
